Created by pupils from schools across Sunderland during our opening Schools Festival, the Space Banners on display in the Inventor's Lab celebrate the creativity and imagination inspired by Our Home in Space.
Led by artist Polina Chizhova-Wright, children and young people designed their own imagined worlds, filling the banners with planets, stars, black holes, aliens and spaceships. If you look closely, you might even spot a space pickle!
Using a sublimation printing process, these designs were permanently transferred from paper to fabric, creating colourful artworks that showcase the ideas, curiosity and creativity of Sunderland's young people. As heat is applied, the printed ink transforms into a gas and bonds permanently with the fabric, producing vibrant and lasting textile artworks.
The finished banners will be used as storytelling prompts, inspiring visitors to imagine the characters, adventures and worlds hidden within each design.
